What’s the difference between a blondie and a brownie?

I’ve always been a fan of brownies ever since I can remember! They’re simple to make and can be made in so many different ways. When it came to blondies, however, I wasn’t that interested until I finally decided to try one. Man, was it good! Blondies are buttery, soft, and delectable!

The main difference between a blondie and a brownie is, of course, the chocolate! Brownies are usually made with white sugar while blondies use a majority of brown sugar and more vanilla. They both are still made with flour, salt, eggs, and some form of fat

Easy Chocolate Walnut Blondie Ingredients

The ingredients are pretty simple in this recipe; but, let’s still walk through them to understand them! You can find pretty much all of these ingredients at your local grocery store. Most of them are relatively cheap which makes these blondies even better!

  • Butter: I love using butter in blondies and brownies! For this recipe, I suggest using unsalted butter since you’ll be adding salt to the dry mix. If you only have salted butter, remove the salt from the recipe.

  • Sugar: A lot of blondie recipes use only brown sugar. I decided to use a majority of brown sugar and a small amount of white sugar to decrease some of the molasses taste from the blondies.

  • Eggs: Whenever you’re baking, make sure that all of your ingredients are at room temperature. The eggs, especially, need to be at room temperature. I used 2 large eggs. To make them fudgier, I suggest adding an extra egg yolk to the mix.

  • Vanilla Extract: I used 1 tbsp of pure vanilla extract for this recipe. Blondies usually have more of a vanilla taste to them. The extra 2 teaspoons I added will really shine through.

  • All-Purpose Flour: To thicken the batter, use about 1¾ cup of all-purpose flour. If you’d like a cakier type of blondie, try using cake flour instead; or, you can substitute 2 tbsp of cornstarch for 2 tbsp of the all-purpose flour.

  • Salt: I used kosher salt for this recipe. But, regular table salt will work perfectly fine. You don’t want to add too much salt to mix though. You’ll be able to taste even the slightest bit of extra salt.

  • Baking Powder: I used baking powder as my leavening agent. The baking powder will help the blondies to rise slightly while baking.

  • Pumpkin Pie Spice: For some extra warmth, I added in some all-purpose pumpkin pie spice powder. If you don’t have any on hand, use the following spices and add them to the dry mix: 2 tsp cinnamon, ⅛ tsp clove, ¼ tsp nutmeg, ¼ tsp ground ginger.

  • Chocolate: Since I’m a big fan of chocolate, I decided to use both semi-sweet chocolate chunks and white chocolate chips. The combo was really delicious and went great with the blondies!

  • Walnuts: For some added texture, I had to add some chopped nuts to these blondies! Walnuts always go great with blondies and brownies. They have a mild enough flavor that they won’t overpower the rest of the ingredients.

How to make Chocolate Walnut Blondies:

These blondies are the perfect dessert to make for any occasion! They literally take no time to whip up! The steps are quick and simple and can be followed by ANYONE! I mean ANYONE!

The full written recipe is below, but here’s an overview.

STEP 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients. In a large bowl mix together the flour, baking powder, and pumpkin pie spice.

STEP 2: Mix the Remaining Ingredients. In another large bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Add in the eggs and vanilla and whisk vigorously until smooth and fully combined.

STEP 3: Combine the Dry and Wet Ingredients. Add the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is fully combined. Fold in the chocolate chunks, white chocolate chip, and chopped walnuts.

STEP 4: Add the blondie batter to a pan and bake. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth it out. Place the pan in the oven to bake for 25 - 30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

STEP 5: Cool, Slice, and Serve! Remove the blondies from the oven and allow them to cool completely. Cut them into squares and enjoy!

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes! You can definitely make this dessert ahead of time! I suggest keeping your dry ingredients and wet ingredients separate until you’re ready to mix. Crack your eggs and leave everything in its own air-tight containers.

You can make them the night before as well. I suggest decreasing the time cook time by 2 - 3 minutes. Allow the blondies to completely cool. They will stiffen up as they cool. Place them in an air-tight container once cooled. Cut them to the next day and serve!
